 Redang Island (Malay: Pulau Redang) is an island in Kuala Nerus District, Terengganu, Malaysia. It is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is famous for its crystal clear





waters and white sandy beaches. It is one of nine islands, which form a marine sanctuary park offering snorkeling and diving opportunities for tourists.

Archipelago
The Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km (4.3 mi) long and 6 km (3.7 mi) wide. Its highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres (1,178 feet) above sea level. The boundary of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is established by a line linking all points 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) from the shores of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu and Pulau Pinang. The other nearby islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Susu Dara are also gazetted and protected as Marine Parks. Today, only the bigger islands like Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian and Kapas have resort facilities for visitors. The management of Marine Parks primarily involves protection of the sensitive marine and terrestrial ecosystems by controlling the impact from human activities. These include waste pollution management and conservation of coral reefs and terrestrial habitats.


Tourism
In contrast to the neighbouring Perhentian Islands, Redang has a more upmarket image, as almost all accommodation on the island is resort-based. The largest beach is Pasir Panjang on the east side, featuring half a dozen resorts. The beach is covered with soft white sand. Coral and fish can be seen just a few metres from the beach. The other beach resorts are located in Teluk Dalam on the north and Teluk Kalong to the south. Redang has a tropical climate with temperatures steadily around 30 °C (86 °F) and frequent but brief thunderstorms. Like the rest of Malaysia's east coast, Redang is affected by the northeast monsoon from the South China Sea, so most resorts are closed and ferry transport schedules are severely restricted between October and March.

The 2000 film, Summer Holiday was filmed on the Laguna Redang Island Resort, and a replica of the tea house now serves as the resort's gift shop.

Since 2012, the annual Island Music Festival has been hosted on the island every October. It features many regional and international cultural, nature, sports and music activities.

Ecology
The island is an important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the indiscriminate economic exploitation of turtle eggs had caused fewer turtles returning to nest on the island. This has led the Terengganu state government to set up the Koperasi Setiajaya Pulau Redang in 1989, a cooperative aiming to develop and manage socio-economic programmes that could improve the livelihood of Pulau Redang locals without endangering its natural resources

Kuala Lumpur to Redang by Air
If traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Redang by air, there are flights available that take you directly to Redang Island. Kuala Lumpur hosts many international commercial flights, but to get to Redang tourists have to take a local one. Traveling by air is certainly the easiest way of getting to Redang Island from Kuala Lumpur.

Berjaya Air offers air flights from Kuala Lumpur to Redang for RM 249 (Malaysian Ringgits) one way and RM 526 for return flights. Subang Airport is the only one operating flights currently. The total flight time from Kuala Lumpur to Redang Island is about 55 minutes.

Berjaya Air uses the Berjaya Resort airstrip for landing and from there directly takes people who booked at Berjaya resort to their location while other have to arrange additional ferry rides.

The other alternative option to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Redang by air is to fly to Kuala Terrenganu first, and then take a boat or ferry to go to Redang Island. The flights from AirAsia, Malaysian Airline and Firefly take passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu. The flight time from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terrenganu is less than one hour.

Both Air Asia and Malaysia Airline depart from Kuala Lumpur International airport, while Firefly uses the Subang airport.

Kuala Lumpur to Redang by Bus
Bus travel from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu is about 7 to 8 hours, which include five major coaches that departs from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu. Transnasional, Nice, Sani express, Maraliner and Kesatuan are the ones that you can catch from KL for a trip to Kuala Terrenganu. Most buses will depart from Hentian Putra bus terminal.

You can either book a normal coach or a deluxe one. The seats in the deluxe coaches will be more comfortable than the seats in normal coaches. There will be a slight difference in the fare as well, as the deluxe coaches are expensive as compare to normal coaches (but more comfy).

Kuala Lumpur to Redang by Boat or Ferry
As discussed above, you need to travel to Kuala Terrenganu from Kuala Lumpur by bus first. From there, you can catch a boat or ferry to the Redang Island. There are two jetties in Kuala Terrenganu that takes passenger to Redang Island. One is Merang jetty and another is Shahbandar jetty. The bus station in Kuala Terrenganu is about 15 minute walk to Shahbandar jetty and a 40 minute drive to Merang jetty.

From Shahbandar Jetty: You can catch a public ferry which leaves at 9 am or get one arranged from the resort that you will be staying in. Most ferry leave at 9 am in the morning with only public offering two more rides at 10:30 am and then in the evening at 3 pm.

From Merang Jetty: Most ferries leave at 9:30 am and Laguna Island Resort offers another one at 12 pm. The ferry rides take about 40 minutes from Merang jetty and about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Shahbandar jetty.
